The short version
- Static codes never expire. The help centre says they keep working when the trial ends, because the content is inside the code itself.
- Dynamic codes stop when the 14-day trial ends. Scans then reach a service page until you upgrade.
- Dynamic codes stop 30 days after a paid plan ends. Until then they keep redirecting, but you cannot edit them.
QR Code Generator Pro is now called QRCG by Bitly in its help centre. The rules below are from those pages.
Dynamic codes stop when the free trial ends
The pricing page says "Start with 14 days for free" and that no card is needed. The help centre says dynamic codes made during the trial are deactivated when it ends. Someone who scans one is taken to a service page instead of your page.
You can still log in, and your code data is kept, but you cannot view it until you upgrade. Static codes in the account keep working.
Upgrading switches them back on
The help centre says upgrading to a paid plan reactivates your dynamic codes, however long ago the trial ended. It can take up to 1 hour before they scan again on phones.
- Each plan has a code limit. The pricing page lists 2 dynamic codes on Starter, 50 on Advanced and 250 on Professional. Starter also has a limit of 10,000 scans.
- Extra codes must be paused. If you made more dynamic codes than your new plan allows, you pause some before you can upgrade. A paused code does not reach your page.
- A new account does not help. The help centre says a code cannot be reactivated from a new account, or by making a new code with the same content.
Dynamic codes stop 30 days after a paid plan ends
The help centre says cancelling does not switch codes off at once. Dynamic codes keep redirecting until the end of the period you paid for, and for 30 more days after it. During those 30 days you cannot edit them. After that the account is locked and scans reach a service page.
Deleting the account deactivates dynamic codes straight away, the help centre says. Reactivating the subscription brings them back.
Cancel early if you want to stop
- Plans renew automatically. The pricing page says all subscriptions renew until you cancel, and the help centre says accounts renew yearly.
- The notice period is unclear. The help centre says to cancel at least 1 day before the renewal date. The pricing page says the notice period is 30 days before the end of the billing cycle. If you plan to stop, cancel more than 30 days ahead.
- No refunds for unused time. The help centre says a renewal cannot be cancelled once it has been charged.
How to check what kind of code you printed
- Scan the code with your phone camera. Read the address it shows before you open it.
- Look at the domain. The domain is the main part of the address, such as qrco.de. The help centre names qrco.de as an example of the short addresses its dynamic codes use.
- A short address means a dynamic code. It works only while that service redirects it, so its plan rules apply.
- Your own address means a static code. If the code opens your website or shows your WiFi or contact details directly, it keeps working whatever happens to the account.
What to do if your codes depend on the plan
A dynamic code points at the company that made it, so only that company can switch it back on. You have two options.
- Keep paying. If the code is printed on things you cannot replace, the plan keeps it working.
- Reprint once. Make a new code that points to an address you control, or to a service that does not switch codes off. Replace the printed copies before the plan ends.
If a code has already stopped, our guide on what to do when a QR code stops working walks through your options.
What you get here
Static codes and fixed short links are free without an account. A free account includes 10 editable codes with scan counts, and Pro makes them unlimited for €59 a year or one lifetime payment. There is no trial to run out.
Codes keep redirecting whether or not you pay, and stay editable. We stop a code only for abuse, checked with Google Web Risk. If the site ever closes, you get 12 months' notice and an export. Read our no-expiry pledge.
Print checks for any new code
- At least 2 cm wide, dark on a light background, with a clear margin around it.
- Matt, not glossy, so light does not wash out the code.
- Scan a proof with two phones before you print the full run.
